ORIGINAL POST:  On May 20th, ArtPlace America announced the award of a $240,000 grant and on June 26, the Community Foundation of North Louisiana presented a grant award of $32,500 to the Shreveport Regional Arts Council (SRAC) for the unusual and unexpected UNSCENE! monthly un-festival. UNSCENE! was chosen from over 1,200 applications to ArtPlace America and more than 40 grantees of the Community Foundation as an exceptional example of creative placemaking.

ArtPlace America is a collaboration of leading national and regional foundations, banks and federal agencies committed to accelerating creative placemaking – putting art at the heart of a portfolio of strategies designed to revitalize communities. This is ArtPlace America’s third cycle of grant awards. With this round of grants, in total, ArtPlace America has awarded a total of $42.1 million in 134 grants to 124 projects in 79 communities across the U.S. (and a statewide project in the state of Connecticut).

The Community Foundation of North Louisiana provides a variety of charitable funds and gift options to help its partners achieve their vision for a stronger, more vibrant community. By bringing together fund donors, their financial advisors and nonprofit agencies, the Foundation is a powerful catalyst for building charitable giving and effecting positive change in our area.

Shreveport Regional Arts Council will hasten the launch of the 9-block Shreveport Common area through the monthly production of UNSCENE! By bringing in enthusiastic local and residency artists to build up and advance the “uncommon” creative community that is Shreveport Common. Taking the lead as Artistic Director for this unique artistic series is Academy Award winning director, animator, and public artist Brandon Oldenburg. Shreveport Common will be brought to life one Saturday a month for twelve months, to help create an indelible artistic mark in this unusual cultural community, wherein artists are at the helm of driving and sustaining vibrancy. UNSCENE! will feature unprecedented arts exhibitions, unplugged performing arts experiences, an unforeseen fresh food market, uncanny parades, unimagined scavenger hunts to discover what’s unseen in Shreveport Common, and unexpected spaces in which to walk, run, or bike ride. UNSCENE! will ultimately unleash new ways for citizens and visitors to experience the Arts.

“The primary strategy for making the Shreveport Common community a creative place is putting artists at the helm of driving vibrancy…the reality that a place is dynamic, exciting and ever evolving will attract developers as partners” explains Pam Atchison, SRAC Executive Director. “This funding support from ArtPlace America allows SRAC to put Artists to work creating UNSCENE! to stimulate this creative place for Shreveport and Northwest Louisiana!”
